Staying Focused in Your Home Based Business Can Be Challenging

Does this sound familiar? It's 9:30 AM and you've decided to start your work day. You arrive at your computer to check your email and suddenly you remember that you need to put the clothes from the washer into the dryer. You know it will just take a second and tell yourself that you'll be right back. You head to the laundry room.

Here's where the problem begins to flourish which gets you into trouble in generating the results you want from your business.

I say real trouble, because if you are anything like the old me, it was so easy to get distracted from working my business from home. In the past, my story would have continued like this:

I placed the clothes in the dryer and when leaving the laundry room, I noticed the dishes needed to be put away. As I finished up, my eyes would get a glimpse of the trash which needed to be taken out. On the way to taking the trash out, I'd say hello to a neighbor and notice the plants on the porch need watering. While I'm putting the hose away, I'll pull a few weeds and head back inside.

As I was washing my hands and thinking I needed to head back to the computer to get some work done, I saw that the sink really needed a quick cleaning itself and heck, while I'm here, I might as well go go ahead and get the rest. I just love a sparkling clean bathroom.

It's now 11:45 AM. I could go on, but you get the picture. This really happens!

Let me ask you a question.

If you spent $ 600K on a brick and mortar business and you needed to show up to unlock your door and conduct business, would you be doing all the busy things I just listed? Yes, but you would have done those at another time and not during business hours!

During the course of learning how to be successful in a home based business, I realized that time management, commitment and desire played a huge role in determining my day. If you can relate to what I'm saying here, sometimes these simple steps can help you.

Make a list before you go to bed of all the things you need to get done the next day. Prioritize them. The ones that are income producing activities should go on top. Then your busy work can follow. The ones that can be done in the next couple of days will go on the bottom. Stick to your list, cross them off as you go and just get them done.

Re-evaluate your progress through your day and ask yourself if you've been true to your dreams and goals in relation to the work I have performed that's going to allow me to reach all that you want accomplish in life. If you need to put in more time, do. If not, do not.

Look in the mirror and see if there is not a defect root to the problem of staying focused. Like fear, which is a whole other subject. Fear of rejection, fear of failure are very, very real for the new home based business entrepreneur. Get help if you need.

The beauty of having your own business is that you can pick and choose your hours to work. The draw back to that is most of the time new entrepreneurs are not disciplined enough to be their own boss. In that case, an accounting partner or coach would be helpful.

The biggest problem I've seen in the industry regarding lack of focus is really just putting off that which they do not want to do for fear, which we've already touched on, or the deer in headlight syndrome. They are overwhelmed and do not have a game plan for success. Another is the tasks at hand in their business may require them to get out of their box and be uncomfortable. So, they subconsciously find busy work that they feel they can justify as a good days work.

Do not lie to yourself. Be true to yourself. If you need help organizing, prioritizing, or you suffer from dealing with business tasks that are uncomfortable, talk with your mentor, coach or upline to help you through this critical adjustment.

The effort is well worth it!
